Amsterdam to become world’s Bitcoin capital

The Dutch company BitStraat has launched a project in Amsterdam providing local merchants with a tablet POS terminal they can use to process payments carried out with bitcoins. Transactions are directly converted into EUR. First 100 retailers will get the device for free.

The Bitstraat co-founder Max Barendregt explains: ‘Merchants can already accept bitcoins on their phone or laptop. That’s why we created the terminal similar to a credit card terminal. They no longer have to get their gadgets out from under the counter to start accepting payments.’

So far 22 merchants have signed up for the deal, including cafes, bars, shops and a ‘boutique hostel’. The target of 100 merchants could be achieved by the end of February, 2015. After that, merchants can either pay 10 EUR a month to rent the device or buy the terminal outright from BitStraat for 120 EUR.
